Our Film Career

The kids with the crew

How many ants can you fit on a blade of grass?

Last Saturday we were visited by the film crew from China for the documentary they are doing about Americans adopting from China. The producer and cameraman were the same guys we'd met summer before last when all this started. Although they were originally going to film us in a park, they decided they wanted to come to the house - which led to a last minute frantic cleaning day for Charlie and I (we are definitely not tidy house people). Anyway, they were quite nice and just wanted to follow us around and film for a while. Since they had limited time, we didn't go anywhere except the house and then the kids rode their bikes to the park and played for a while--all caught on tape. I don't think we would be good reality TV stars since our lives are not that exciting!

Couple of things we found interesting - first, they absolutely loved the dogs and spent time playing with them and also filmed them a lot. The second thing - we have a ton of family photos all over the house and they were fascinated by them. They filmed every single one of them, even my great grandparents' wedding photo. We are not sure why, but a friend of mine from Iran said that in her culture, photos are not considered decorations and she never put any photos up until she moved to America. So maybe it's the same in China? After they left the house they spent quite a bit of time filming the reporter person outside (in front of our yard that has definitely not seen any weeding or clean up this spring). They also liked the neighbor's chickens which were hanging out in their front yard. We are hoping at some point we will see a copy of this documentary, but we don't know when.

Not much else is new. Today we spent a lovely afternoon with some friends who have a daughter who is right between Annie and Bethany in age and almost exactly Annie's size. The kids were fascinated by an ant nest they found and spent a lot of time loading blades of grass with ants and carrying them carefully around the yard. As always, they remind me that there are so many amazing things in the world if we just look around us.

Wow! How fascinating! (I clicked over from your comment on Annie's blog - isn't she great?) I hope y'all are able to see a copy of the documentary. I've always wondered about the general opinion in China of American families adopting Chinese children.

We have a kindergartner from Jiangxi and are waiting to adopt again -- hopefully within the next year, but who knows with this wait?

Hi Betsy! Thank you so much for your very sweet comment on my blog!! Thank you too, TM:) I remember talking to you before Lizzie came home! You were very sweet and very helpful! LOVE your blog as well and your pics are great. I also hope you get to see the documentary and like TM, I have always wondered what most Chinese think of foreign adoptions. Very interesting!

Thank you again and BTW, I am Annie and we have a Charlie and my cousin (who is like my sister is Betsy)!! LOL!

It'll be GREAT to see the final documentary - you'll have to let us know how we can see it! As for kids / ants / discovery - yeah - that's a big part of living eh?
